How to Sew a Wizard Hat

How to Sew a Wizard Hat thumbnail
Sew a wizard hat for a child's costume.

Start a costume for yourself or a child by sewing a wizard's hat. Use a fabric with a lot of body, such as felt, so that the hat stays upright. You can also use a satin or cotton fabric reinforced with interfacing. Leave the hat plain if you prefer or glue stars and crescent moon shapes to it for extra detail. The craft is simple enough that a child can help you make the hat.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the measuring tape around the head of the person who will wear the hat. Record the measurement.

    • 2

Draw a slightly curved line on the poster board or newspaper that measures half the measurement around the person's head, plus 1 inch. For example, if the person's head measured 18 inches around, draw a curved line that measures 10 inches across.

    • 3

Draw two lines extending up from each end of the curved line to make a triangle shape. Make each line about 14 inches long, or longer if you want a really tall hat.

    • 4

Cut out the pattern for the wizard's hat.

    • 5

Fold the fabric in half with the wrong sides facing out. Pin the pattern to the fabric, lining up one straight edge of the pattern with the fold of the fabric. Cut out the fabric.

    • 6

Fold the interfacing in half, if using, and pin the pattern to it, one straight edge along the interfacing's fold. Cut out the interfacing.

    • 7

Place the interfacing on the ironing board, sticky side up. Put the fabric on it, wrong side down. Use a warm iron to fuse the interfacing to the fabric.

    • 8

Fold the fabric in half with the right side facing in. The interfacing, if you are using it, should face out. Pin the long straight edge of the fabric together and stitch together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

    • 9

Turn the wizard's hat right side out. Have the person try it on to make sure it fits.

    • 10

Open the double-fold bias tape. Line up the center fold of the tape with the bottom edge of the wizard's hat. Pin the tape to the bottom edge all the way around, concealing the raw edge. Stitch the tape to the edge of the hat, overlapping the ends.

    • 11

Cut crescent moon and star shapes out of scrap fabric if you like. Either hand sew the shapes to the hat or attach them with a fabric glue. Let the glue dry for a few hours before wearing the hat.
