Card Games: How to Win Playing Gin

Card Games: How to Win Playing Gin thumbnail
Gin can be played by two to four players.

Gin is a popular variation on the card-game Rummy usually played by two to four players. The goal of a player is to create a meld (three or four of a kind or sequences of three cards in the same suit). A player wins a hand by knocking or going gin. Games typically end when a player reaches 100 points.

Instructions

    • 1

Deal 10 cards to each player beginning with the player on the dealer's left.

    • 2

Place the remaining cards face down in a pile to form the stock pile. Turn the top card over and place it beside the stock to form the discard pile.

    • 3

Begin a turn with the player to the dealer's left either drawing a card from the stock pile or picking up the top card on the discard pile. If a player takes a card from the discard pile he cannot discard that card in the same turn.

    • 4

Continue playing by taking turns in a clockwise direction from the dealer. Keep any melds you form in your hand. If a card can be used in two different melds you must choose only one.

    • 5

Knock when the cards in your hands that do not fit into a meld (deadwood) add together to a total less than 10 points. Face cards are worth 10 points and aces are worth one. If you match all of your cards into melds, that is called going gin.

    • 6

Lay your cards face up on the table after knocking, arranging them into melds. Have the other player do the same. If you knocked and did not go gin, the other player has a chance to lay off any unmatched cards in his hand onto your melds, thereby reducing the number of points in his hand. If you go gin the other player cannot lay off cards.

    • 7

Score your hand by deducting your total deadwood count from your opponents. Add the difference to your total score. If you go gin, you receive a 25 point bonus. If you knock without going gin and your opponent's deadwood is equal to or less than yours they receive a 20 point bonus plus the difference between your two deadwood counts.
