How to Set Dye in Cotton Fabric
If you have old clothing that you want to freshen up with a new look, or want to change the color of your linens, dyeing them is a good option. This is particularly a good option with cotton because the dye sets well, resulting in rich and beautiful colors. The process of dyeing a cotton fabric doesn't take more than an hour or two, and the resulting product will be bright like a new piece of fabric.

1
Set the cotton fabric you're dyeing onto the scale and weigh it. Take note of this number, as the dye powder has specific instructions for how much dye to put in per pound of material. Pick out the dye colors you want for the cotton, and if you have multiple shades, start the dyeing process with the lightest color first.

2
Fill the stainless steel pot with 3 gallons of water and put it on the stove. Heat the water to 140 degrees F to ensure deep colors.

3
Measure 2 cups of water and pour into the small pot. Heat the water on the stove to about 140 degrees F. Measure the dye powder using the instructions on the bottle; typically it is one package of powder per pound of dry cotton fabric. Use twice the amount for dark or really bright colors.

4
Pour the dye powder into the 2 cups of water and stir it well. Pour the mixed dye powder into the large stainless-steel pot of water, then stir that well with the spoon. Measure and pour 1 cup of salt and 1 tbsp. of laundry detergent into the large stainless-steel pot, and then stir it around with the spoon.

5
Place the cotton fabric into the large stainless-steel pot, stirring it occasionally. Keep the water at 140 degrees F using the stove. Take out the cotton fabric when it reaches your desired color, with the understanding that the color will be deeper the longer it is in the dye, up to an hour.
-
6
Rinse off the cotton fabric using cold water, running the water until it runs clear. Wash the cotton in a washing machine with mild detergent and warm water. Hang the cotton on a clothesline or machine dry.
