How to String Rubber Worms

How to String Rubber Worms thumbnail
Rig rubber fishing worms with a Palomar fishing knot.

Rubber worms are a mainstay in the tackle box of many fresh and saltwater anglers. Also referred to as soft plastic worms, rubber worms are manufactured by different companies and are available in a range of styles and colors to meet the needs of anglers in a variety of fishing situations. Rigging rubber worms involves the use of terminal tackle, so that the worm is securely attached for presentation.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a size 2/0 to 4/0 extra wide gap (EWG) fish hook onto the end of the monofilament fishing line with a Palomar knot. Moisten the Palomar knot before pulling it down tight against the eye of the hook, and trim excess line extending from the knot with scissors.

    • 2

Hold a rubber worm in one hand so the head is accessible. Hold the EWG hook by the shank with the other hand.

    • 3

Turn the hook so the point is at the nose of the worm and the shank is below the worm.

    • 4

Insert the point of the hook into the nose of the worm. Push the point into the worm's body, half of an inch deep. Turn the point down until it pushes out of the belly of the worm.

    • 5

Slide the worm around the bend, up the shank and onto the keeper bend below the eye.

    • 6

Turn the hook so the point is next to the worm's body. Pinch the middle of the worm slightly upward, and insert the point of the hook into and through the worm body so it exits out of the top of the worm.

    • 7

Straighten the worm between the keeper bend below the eye and the hook point. Insert the point of the hook just barely under the surface of the worm for a "weedless" rig.
