How to Braid String With More Than 3 Strings
Braids made with three strings are the most common, but you can also make braids with as many strings as you want. The technique differs for an even number of strings and an odd number. Follow the techniques and use a few simple tricks to make braiding more than three strings easier - it can be confusing with many strings involved.

Even Numbers

1
Measure and cut four, six, eight or more strings and line up the ends. Tie them together with an overhand knot near one end of the strings. Anchor the tied end in a clipboard or binder clip.
-
2
Arrange the strings into two groups, a left and right group, with an equal amount of strings on either side. Lay them out neatly next to each other to make it easier to keep track of them.

-
3
Move the furthest outside string on one side so that it crosses over the other strings on the same side and place it next to the innermost string in the group on the other side.
-
4
Bring the furthest outside string from the alternate side (the opposite side you started on), cross it over the other strings on its side and the string that you brought over from the other side. Place it next to the innermost string on the opposite side. Repeat this process and alternate sides to complete the braid.
Odd Numbers
-
5
Tie the ends of an odd number of strings together, five, seven or nine, and anchor them with a sturdy object to make it easier to work.
-
6
Divide the strings into a fan formation with an even amount of space between each one. Bring one of the outermost strings across the two next to it and place it on the inside of the two on the opposite end.
-
7
Cross the outermost string on the opposite side that you started on over the one next to it and the one you just moved from the other side. Keep the outermost string on each side next to the one that was just moved, and alternate sides until the braid is finished.
