Instructions for the Board Game "Abalone"

"Abalone" is a strategy game in which each person tries to win by pushing his opponent's marbles off of the board. The strategy can be complex since there are many different ways for marbles to move. "Abalone" was a Mensa Select winner in 1990, and got a "Game of the Year" award in 1989 in France. It is recommended for ages 7 and up.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the abalone board so the players are sitting across from each other and each is facing a flat edge of the board.

    • 2

Give one player 14 black marbles and the other player 14 white marbles.

    • 3

Place one marble in each space on the board starting with the row closest to you until you run out of marbles. The row closest to you should contain five marbles. The next row should contain six marbles and the row furthest out should contain three.

    • 4

Choose to push one, two or three marbles of your own color in a straight line one space in any direction. After you have moved your marbles, it is your opponent's turn to move.

    • 5

Move your opponent's marbles one space by pushing a group of your marbles into a smaller group of his marbles. Two of your marbles can push one of his marbles, and three of your marbles can push either one or two of his marbles. If you push one of your opponent's marbles off of the board, it is out of the game.

    • 6

Push six of your opponent's marbles off of the board to win the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can play with up to six people by altering the initial setup and the way the marbles are placed. You will need to use additional colored marbles to play with more than two people.

  • It is against the rules to push more than three of your marbles at once.
