Oranges are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, and they are ideal as a sweet, juicy snack or to add punch to a recipe. But, if you don't pick the right oranges, you could end up with a bitter taste in your mouth. Next time you're at the farmer's market or in the produce aisle, don't just start grabbing oranges and tossing them in a bag; know what to look for to ensure you pick tasty oranges every time.
Pick up the orange and gently squeeze it. Choose oranges that are firm rather than soft and spongy.
Feel the skin on the orange. A good orange will have smooth, slightly textured thin skin. These are not only the tastiest oranges, but the ones with the most juice as well.
Pay attention to the weight of the orange. The best oranges will be heavy for their size. This doesn't mean the bigger the orange the better. Instead, if you have two small oranges in each hand, the one that is heavier will be the better orange.
Skip oranges that have any traces of mold on the skin. Mold may not be black, green or brown; it often forms in a whitish color, so avoid picking oranges with such characteristics.

- The color of the orange is not a good indicator of ripeness or taste. Some oranges that are not as bright in color are just as tasty as the brightest orange in the bunch. Look for other characteristics instead.
