If you live in Orange County, California and your used books are collecting dust on the bookshelf, you can put them to better use. For example, you can donate them to children who wouldn't otherwise have books, fund job training programs or help the Orange County library system. Donate books in good condition to the program of your choice, and don't forget to get a tax receipt. Your book donations to a qualified non-profit can be deducted off your federal taxes, you can claim the fair market value of the books.

Step 1

Help the Orange County library system by donating your books. You can find them online at Ocpl.org. The El Toro, Irvine Heritage Park ad Irvine University Park branches of the county library system accept book donations for their "Friends of the Library" book sales. Proceeds from book sales help fund library programs.

Send children's books to the "Los Angeles Times" for their Reading By 9 program, which gives books to young children, to promote early reading habits. The Times holds two book drives annually, one in the spring and one in the fall. You can also mail the books directly to the program at any time of year.

Give children's books to the Children & Families Commission of Orange County's Early Literacy Program, located in Santa Ana. Contact the Early Literacy Program directly to arrange a book donation.

Step 4

Bring any used books to a branch of Goodwill Industries, where they'll be sold and proceeds used to fund Goodwill's job training or youth programs. Orange County communities with Goodwill include Anaheim, Brea, Fullerton, Irvine, Lake Forest and Santa Ana.
