How to Convert Hours to Tenths

If you've ever been in charge of payroll at your place of employment, you're likely familiar with the concept of tenths of hours. This takes a regular measurement of time (for example, 1 hour and 26 minutes) and turns it into more of a standard decimal point. You can take any amount of time and convert it into a tenths of hours reading in just a few minutes.

  • Measure the amount between two time periods in the "hours: minutes" format. For example, if your start time is 6 p.m. and your end time is 7:30 p.m., the amount of time would be 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • Convert any measurement of time from the "hours: minutes" format to minutes. For example, 1 hour and 30 minutes becomes 90 minutes because there are 60 minutes in one hour plus 30 minutes. This equals 90 minutes.

  • Divide the total number of minutes you converted by 60. For example, 90 minutes divided by 60 equals 1.5. That means that the measurement of 1 hour and 30 minutes in "hours: minutes" format is equal to 1.5 hours in "hours/tenths" format.

  • Round off any further decimal places calculated to tenths if required.
