How to Remove Items From the Start Menu

Your Start menu is probably cluttered with shortcuts to programs you never use or may have even removed from your computer. Simplify your life and remove them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Click Start.

  2. Step 2

    Click Settings.

  3. Step 3

    Click Taskbar & Start Menu.

  4. Step 4

    Click the Start Menu Programs tab.

  5. Step 5

    Click Remove.

  6. Step 6

    Click the item you wish to remove, and then click Remove.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat Step 6 for additional items.

  8. Step 8

    Click Close.

  9. Step 9

    Click OK.

Tips & Warnings
  • Click the plus sign (+) to the left of a folder to access items in the folder.
  • All items on the Start menu are shortcuts. Deleting the shortcut does not affect applications or documents.
  • While you are removing items, take advantage of the opportunity to reorganize folders or add new ones.

You may not have settings but you will have control panel. Then you will have what you are looking for.

on 3/20/2008 i can't find "settings" after i click the start button in step #1. I have windows xp professional. can you tell me where it's at?

on 12/31/2006 yo advice is not actual now... all you have to do now is :

1. left click on start
2. right click on shortcut you'd like to delete
3. choose option 'remove from this list'


* that's for ms wind 2k xp sp2
