How to Replace a Message in a Fortune Cookie With Your Own Message thumbnail
Replace the messages in fortune cookies with your own funny or serious tidings.

Whether you want to surprise your significant other with a sweet sentiment or give funny, customized predictions to your party guests, replacing a fortune cookie message with your own tidings takes only a few minutes. According to Good Fortune Inc., the concept of the fortune cookie was born when Chinese revolutionaries hid secret messages inside of lotus nut paste moon cakes in the 13th and 14th centuries to coordinate uprisings against the Mongols. Your messages probably won't be that serious, but they can be cherished mementos. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a bag of fortune cookies at your local supermarket or Oriental grocery store. You may break a few cookies while replacing the fortunes, so you'll need extras.

    • 2

Print your customized messages and cut them into strips of no more than 2 inches by 1/2 inch. To keep your fortunes within the size limits, type them into 2-by-1/2-inch text boxes with 1/8-inch borders in your word processing program.

    • 3

Unwrap a fortune cookie and wrap it with a white paper towel that you've lightly dampened. Microwave the wrapped fortune cookie on high for 20 to 30 seconds -- the cookie is ready when it has softened enough to open.

    • 4

Quickly remove the softened cookie from the microwave -- you only have about 15 to 20 seconds until the cookie loses its flexibility and becomes too brittle to handle. Gently pull the cookie open until you can reach the fortune inside. Remove the fortune and replace it with your customized message. Gently fold the cookie back into its original shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Microwave only one fortune cookie at a time.

  • You can replace the fortune with an engagement ring or another piece of jewelry -- just be sure to close the cookie securely so the item doesn't fall out.

  • Handle the microwaved fortune cookie with care; the steam that may come off the cookie when you remove the paper towel will be very hot.
