How to Get a Resident Visa in America
Obtaining U.S. residency is a dream for many immigrants. Beginning a life in the states requires a thorough immigration process. Getting a resident visa -- or green card -- in America is possible by contacting the U.S. Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services. There are fees involved and be prepared to patient. The process can take six months or more.

Determine the main reason for seeking residency. Employment, marriage, and family immigration are some examples. Collect personal identification documents -- such as your birth certificate, police report and marriage license -- to complete the application forms.

Log online. Visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website (uscis.gov). Click on the "Forms" tab in the main menu. Scroll through the listings and select the "I-485" -- application for residence -- form. Download and complete the form in its entirety.

Download Form G-325A and fill out necessary biographical data, Form I-94 to specify how long you plan to remain in the US, and Form I-693 to detail your medical history.

Submit all application forms including any and all copies of personal or employment information to the USCIS. Include a payment of all fees -- a maximum of $1070 per application form. Follow the interview process to complete your application process. Allow six months to obtain your residency visa.
