Home-made jewelry can add a special touch to any outfit.

Creating your own button and safety pin bracelets is a surprisingly simple but rewarding craft. A unique button and pin bracelet makes a thoughtful gift, or make some for yourself since they go with almost everything. Visit crafting stores, bead shops and resale shops to find unique and cheap materials to use. Try creating a bracelet with variations on the same color scheme for a beautiful effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two even pieces of elastic string to go around your wrist. Make sure that there is plenty of extra elastic (5-10 inches) so that you can properly secure the bracelet. You can always cut off excess later.

    • 2
Make colorful patterns or arrange the beads randomly.

Open the safety pin and string beads down the open shaft until it is halfway filled. Then string a button on and continue adding beads until you have only 1/4 of an inch free -- or just enough space so that the pin will completely close. Repeat this process for about 1/4 or 1/5 of the total pins you will use. You can also vary the button placement, stringing some at the top and some at the bottom. Bead the remaining pins without buttons. Only use buttons that have solid faces and protruding holes in the back.

Tie the two pieces of elastic string together loosely on one end. Thread one elastic string through the first safety pin's bottom hole (opposite of the side that opens).

    • 4

Next, thread the second piece of elastic string through the opposite side of the safety pin.

    • 5

Repeat this process until all the safety pins are threaded through both elastic bands. Alternating the direction of each safety pin creates a unique look.

    • 6
Use any size safety pin as long as your beads will slide on.

Untie the initial knot, being very careful not to let the safety pins fall off. Tie all four loose ends together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Typically a bracelet will require 30-50 safety pins. Of course this estimate depends on one's wrist and on the size of the safety pins.

  • Use horizontal beads to create a more dynamic bracelet.

  • Be careful of the sharp safety pins.
