Microsoft Excel is a full-featured and versatile spreadsheet program, but like any other piece of software, Excel may have occasionally have errors, forcing you to use unusual methods to get it working again. One of the most common troubleshooting options is using Excel in its "safe mode," which causes Excel to run only more basic features and to ignore certain startup options. That way Excel will ideally avoid corrupted files or other errors that could cause problems. You can start Excel 2003 in safe mode in just a few easy steps.

      Locate the icon for opening Excel 2003 by clicking the "Start" button and selecting "All Programs," then "Microsoft Office," then "Microsoft Office Excel 2003." Don't click the icon yet.

      Hold down the "Control" key on your keyboard while you left-click "Microsoft Office Excel 2003." You should click the left mouse button normally, but continue to hold down the "Control" key until you see a Windows message prompt.

      Select "Yes" when Windows prompts you for confirmation of running Excel in safe mode. Excel will open after you click "Yes."

Tips & Warnings

  • Many features are disabled in Safe Mode, so you may not be able to edit or create all the items you want in your Excel files. Disabled features include saving templates, using the AutoCorrect list, customized toolbars and accessing documents with restricted permissions. Also, if you make any changes to your preferences, such as in the "Options" menu under "Tools," Excel will not save those preferences.
