How to Cook Bratwurst in a Pan thumbnail
Traditional brats fry deliciously with other savory ingredients.

Bratwursts -- German for "fry" and "sausage" -- are tender, fresh sausages enjoyed in a variety of ways. Although grilling bratwursts over an open flame appeals to many brat lovers, you may opt to cook bratwurst in a pan also. Because brats contain raw meat, you must cook them completely before serving them. Follow specific cooking instructions to ensure that the brats remain tender and tasty. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 12-inch skillet (with lid)
  • 1 can or bottle of beer

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 1 tbsp. of vegetable oil and pour it into the skillet. Heat the oil over medium-high heat for about two minutes.

    • 2

Add the bratwurst to the hot oil and cook them for about five minutes. Turn the brats every minute or so to brown them well on all sides.

    • 3

Remove the brats from the skillet and set them aside momentarily.

    • 4

Add the second tablespoon of oil to the skillet and heat it for one minute. Add the onions and stir them while they cook for three minutes.

    • 5

Pour half of the beer into the skillet and boil the beer and onions for about five minutes.

    • 6

Place the brats back into the skillet and add the remaining beer to the pan.

    • 7

Cover the skillet and cook the bratwursts for approximately two minutes. Turn the brats over and cook them covered for two more minutes.

    • 8

Remove the brats and place them onto the brat buns on the platter.

    • 9

Cook in the oniony beer, uncovered, for about five minutes -- until the beer reduces and forms a thick gravy.

    • 10

Pour the beer gravy over the brats on the buns.
