1
Determine how many chocolate butterflies you will need to make. This will be the number of favors multiplied by the number of butterflies you want in each favor bag. If the chocolate butterflies are going to be large, you may only want one in each favor bag, but if they are small, you may want two or three.
-
2
Melt the chocolate. To properly melt the chocolate, you will need to boil water in a large pot. Meanwhile, place the chocolate into a double boiler. Chocolate buttons are most ideal for melting. If you bought a large piece of chocolate instead, you will need to break it into small pieces prior to putting it in the double boiler. When the water reaches a rapid boil, turn off the heat, and place the double boiler into the pot of boiling water. Continuously stir the chocolate until it is completely melted.

3
Fill the candy trays. Use a spoon to pour the melted chocolate into the butterfly candy molds. Be careful not to over fill the molds. If the chocolate pours out over the top, the butterflies will not look their best. Once there is chocolate in each of the butterfly molds, gently shake the entire mold back and forth a little. This will help get rid of any air bubbles in the chocolate, and make the bottoms of the chocolate butterflies flat.
-
4
Place the filled candy trays in the freezer. This will expedite the solidifying process. Although it depends on the size of the chocolate butterflies, it should only take a few minutes in the freezer.
-
5
Fill the favor bags. Place the pre-determined number of chocolate butterflies into each favor bag. Do not secure the favor bags until after the thank you cards are attached.

6
Cut the stationary into butterfly shapes. You can do this by using a stencil to draw out the shapes first, or if you have a home die press, you can buy a butterfly die press shape. If you have access to a University Library, you may also want to check to see if they have a die press machine available to use. Many University Libraries have them for education students to use when preparing for student teaching lessons. If you plan to use a stencil, consider using a butterfly cookie cutter. It will be large enough for your note, and it will have simple lines. See an example of one in the resource section of this article. However you make the butterfly shapes, you will need to make sure the butterflies are large enough for the labels to fit on.

7
Print your thank you message on clear labels. Chose the label template in your computer to make the labels the way you want them to look. Then load the clear labels into you printer and print them out. Depending on your printer, you may need to stay with it and print one sheet at a time so they do not jam in the printer. If you are concerned about printing them, you can save the labels to a file and have them printed at a print shop. When the labels are finished, you can attach one label to each stationary butterfly.
-
8
Fold the butterflies in half at the body, so it looks like they are flying. Fold them so the label is on the inside of the fold.
-
9
Use the hole punch to punch a hole in the folded butterfly. If there is room, punch the hole in the body, so the wings can stay slightly open. This will allow guests to read the message without having to open the favor bag right away.
-
10
Slide a ribbon through the holes in the stationary and then use the ribbon to secure the favor bags closed.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a group of people coming over to help make the favors, you can have all the thank you cards made in advance to make the process go faster.
Make sure the favors are stored in a cool place to prevent the chocolate butterflies from melting any or getting messy in the favor bags.
