How to Change the Band on a Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
The band on the Dyson upright vacuum is responsible for transferring the spinning of the vacuum's motor to the brush roll. Dyson vacuum cleaners use suction to capture dirt and other debris, however the suction alone does not remove dirt from deeper in the carpet pile. An agitator brush roll is essential in providing the necessary sweeping motion to lift the particles from the rug or carpet. A worn or damaged belt will not make the brush roll spin, or spin efficiently, causing the belt to degrade from overheating or break altogether. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Unplug the Dyson vacuum cleaner and press the handle release lever to lower the handle. Turn the cleaner over so that the bottom of the cleaning head is facing upward.
-
2
Remove the three plastic screws holding the cleaning head cover onto the bottom of the cleaning head with a flat screwdriver. Remove the plastic cover from the bottom of the vacuum.
-
-
3
Slide the brush roll from the two slots (one on each side of the cleaning head).
-
4
Remove the belt (or band) from the brush roll. Pull the belt from the metal drive shaft on the left side of the Dyson's motor.
-
5
Slide the new belt onto the brush roll and position it in the same location previously occupied by the worn belt. Place the belt around the metal drive shaft adjacent to the vacuum's motor.
-
6
Slide the brush roll back into the slots at the sides of the cleaning head. Be careful when replacing the brush roll as the new belt will apply tension to the brush roll and make replacing it a slightly more difficult task than removing it.
-
7
Place the cleaning head cover back onto the bottom of the Dyson's cleaning head and tighten the plastic screws with the screwdriver.
-
8
Plug the vacuum cleaner into the wall socket and turn on the cleaner. Check the brush roll. A spinning brush roll signifies a successful belt replacement.

Tips & Warnings
Use the shaft of the flat screwdriver to pry the brush roll into place if you are unable to force enough slack in the belt to replace it into the slots.
Do not touch the drive shaft next to the Dyson's motor if you have used the vacuum cleaner as it will likely be hot.
