Feel the surface of the laptop. If it has become too hot, turn if off and wait a few minutes for it to cool down before turning it back on. Gateway provides a fan to prevent the overheating of the processor that affects the performance of the computer. But without proper care, overheating is inevitable.

Free up your hard drive. Click "Start," then type "disk" in the search bar. Select "Disk Cleanup" and select the disk you want to clean up. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the process. After the disk cleanup, manually delete files you no longer use. To remove programs, click "Start" and type "uninstall" in the search box. Select "Uninstall a Program" under the "Control Panel" group, then select the programs you want to uninstall and click the "Uninstall" button.

Scan your laptop for viruses. Make sure the anti-virus software you are using is updated and reputable.

Replace your hard drive with a compatible one that has the same configuration, or one that is from another compatible Gateway laptop, if possible. If the laptop still fails to boot properly, there might be a hardware problem with the computer.

Avoid putting the laptop in a place where it does not have ample space to breathe. Do not place it on top of a foam or bed because the foam or bed will eventually cover the part of the laptop where the heat escapes. Place it on top of a table or any flat surface.
