How to Upgrade IE5 to IE6 on Windows 2000

Windows 2000 shipped with Internet Explorer 5, but this release was supplanted by Internet Explorer 6. The Internet Explorer 6 upgrade happens automatically as part of the application's installation. The process requires your system to restart, so you'll need to set aside a period of time when your system is not in heavy demand to perform the upgrade.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Microsoft.com download page for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.

    • 2

Download the setup file and save it to your desktop.

    • 3

Double-click "ie6setup.exe" on your desktop. It is a web-based installer so you must have Internet access for this process.

    • 4

Review the license agreement and click "I accept the agreement" and then click "Next." If you do not accept the agreement, you cannot install the software.

    • 5

Click "Next" to begin the download and install procedure. This happens automatically.

    • 6

Click "OK" when asked to restart your system. You will reboot with Internet Explorer 6 installed in the place of Internet Explorer 5.
