How to Find the Right Words to Express Feelings

Unless you are a poet or skilled orator you may find it difficult to find the right words to express your feelings. Sometimes the recipient of your message makes it even more difficult to express yourself honestly. With thought and practice, the words may start to come to you more fluidly.

Instructions

    • 1

Do some self-reflection to understand why you were having problems expressing yourself to this person. Common reasons range from feeling intimidated by the other person to fear of rejection. Prepare yourself mentally to overcome the fear and seek professional counseling if necessary. A counselor or life coach can also help you come up with the words to express your feelings constructively.

    • 2

Read books and publications on the topic you want to express yourself to get inspiration for expressing yourself in your own words. For instance, if you want to express concerns to your supervisor, read books that touch on the topic of communicating with managers.

    • 3

Write down your thoughts before you express them. Sometimes writing your thoughts gives you inspiration and courage to say what needs to be said. Compose a "stream of consciousness," which is simply writing down the first thoughts that come to mind when you think of this person. Look over your notes to grab words and phrases to start putting together what you want to say.

Consult with trusted friends or family members about your situation to get help with finding the right words. Someone you love and trust may have a special way with words or even know more about the person to whom you want to express yourself.
