Don't let your emotions get the best of you.

Emotions are something that every person has, and every person handles them differently. Having emotions or "being emotional" is not a bad thing when you know how to respectfully and effectively communicate your emotions. The goal is communicating to help the other person understand how you feel. You can use a combination of physical and audio cues to express your emotions.

Instructions

    • 1

Think about what you want to express and practice what you want to say. This may seem strange, but it is important. The more you think about what you want to say, the better you can manage your emotions. It is important to communicate your emotions; it is not necessary to show them.

    • 2

Avoid aggressive gestures such as making or shaking your fists. Regardless of what your words may be expressing, making an aggressive gesture will send a message that may not be your intention. Aggressive gestures can cause the receiver to become defensive and the message will be lost.

    • 3

Use a calm, neutral tone. Breathe deeply and speak slowly. Avoid raising your voice. You may find it helpful to sit while expressing your emotions in order to keep your emotions at a calm level.

    • 4

Arrange your body in a neutral posture to help maintain a neutral tone. If you are sitting, sit with your feet flat on the floor and place your hands in your lap or together with your fingers intertwined. If you are standing, keep your feet shoulder width apart and your hands down by your side.

Ensure that your facial expressions match your emotions. If you are sad and you are smiling, it can be confusing for the receiver to know what you are trying to communicate. Having a neutral facial expression is best. This is so that your emotions can best be expressed by what you are saying and how you are saying it.
