How to Get Rid of an AOL Mail Account

Canceling an account with AOL is relatively simple. For users with a paid account, the process is slightly more complex, but generally, your account can be removed within a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

• AOL user name
• AOL user password
• Answer to security question

Instructions

1. Go to www.aol.com and click the "My Account" link to sign in to your personal account. In order to sign in to your "Master Account" (as opposed to one of seven possible chat names associated with one main account), you will also need to answer a security question.

2. Click on the link titled "Service Options". Next, click "Manage My Subscriptions".

3. For a paid account, click the link titled "Cancel Billing". If you have a free account, simply click "Cancel".

4. Paid accounts will be shown a confirmation page that will offer other, lower-cost plans. There are multiple options at this point: converting to a cheaper plan by choosing a reason for canceling from the drop down menu, keeping the original plan by clicking "Keep My Plan," or canceling your account all together by clicking "Cancel My Billing."

   Free accounts have two options: clicking "Keep My Plan" if you change your mind or "Cancel" to delete the account.

5. For paid accounts there is also the option of canceling your subscription over the phone by calling the number listed on your billing statement.
