How to Create Volume at the Crown of Your Head

How to Create Volume at the Crown of Your Head thumbnail
Even the finest hair can have volume at the crown.

Voluminous hairstyles date back to the 50s, when techniques such as backcombing and teasing came into style. Today, updated versions of the bouffant, beehive and other backcombed hairstyles are fashionable. They look glamorous, as compared to hair that is flat at the crown which strips the hairstyle of volume and body. As a result, hair looks thin and lifeless. Creating volume at the crown is the basis to any backcombed hairstyle. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Upside Down Blow Dry Technique

    • 1

Wash hair with a shampoo which promises to give volume if you have normal to dry hair, or with a clarifying shampoo if you have greasy hair that is weighed down and lacks volume. Use a conditioner on your ends only.

    • 2

Rinse and dry with a towel. Gently brush to remove tangles. To create the best volume, hair should be fresh and clean of any residue.

    • 3

Apply a volumizing product such as mousse or cream.

    • 4

Flip hair upside down and blow dry while tousling hair with your fingers. Spritz with hairspray when dry.

    Using Rollers

    • 5

      Brush hair to remove tangles.

    • 6

Take the section on the crown of your head and separate it into two or three sections with the first being near your forehead, and the next section or sections going towards the back of your head. Each section should be 1 to 2 inches thick.

    • 7

Wrap each section onto a medium sized roller and secure with bobby pins if necessary.

    • 8

Blow dry for two minutes and keep rollers in hair for at least 15 minutes. Then, gently remove from hair. Hair at the crown will be full of body and volume.

    Teasing

    • 9

Spray dry shampoo onto your roots and distribute evenly if your hair is oily, or skip this step if your hair is clean or dry. Hair which is weighed-down with residue won't have volume.

    • 10

Brush hair to remove any tangles and knots.

    • 11

Take a comb and comb the front strands back over your crown.

    • 12

Lift hair from the scalp in 1 to 2 inch sections and tease it with the comb. To tease, run the comb down hair strands in short, rapid movements in the direction opposite hair growth. Hair will be full, voluminous and puffy.

    • 13

Spray with hairspray to hold. Use the teasing method alone or after removing rollers from hair.
