DIY Tints for Eyeglasses

Create your own sunglasses by tinting eyeglasses.

Tinted glasses are common accessories that add style to outfits. Although used to add flare to outfits, people often tint glasses to reduce the amount of glare absorbed from the sun. You can choose various colors for the eyeglass lenses, ranging from dark tints to light yellow tints. Many eyeglass stores will tint eyeglasses; however, this may be costly. Instead, tinting your eyeglasses yourself will help reduce the costs, as well as provide a recreational and educational experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a thermal dye unit including tint solution of the desired color.

    • 2

Fill the thermal dye unit's well with the desired tint solution until it is approximately two-thirds full.

    • 3

Turn on the thermal dye unit and allow the unit to heat up. Determine the appropriate heating temperature by referring to the owner's manual.

    • 4

Remove the lenses from your eyeglasses in the meantime. Pop the lenses out of their position carefully. Clean the lenses with a soft cloth.

    • 5

Affix the lenses in the appropriate lens holder on the thermal dye unit's lens-holding device and secure the lenses into position.

    • 6

Immerse the lenses in the tint solution by lowering the lens-holding device. Allow the lens to soak for 5 to 30 minutes. The amount of time the lenses soak depends on the color of the dye. Light dyes will take longer than dark dyes.

    • 7

Remove the lenses from the tint by lifting the lens-holding device. Allow the lenses to dry and remove them from the lens holder.

    • 8

Affix the lenses to the eyeglass frames by carefully pressing them into their place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the tinting solution on an inexpensive pair of reading glasses before tinting your more costly glasses to ensure you like the results.
