How to Tow With a Ford F250 5.8
The Ford F250 with the 5.8-liter eight-cylinder engine is a capable towing vehicle. When properly equipped it can tow up to 10,000 pounds. This is enough to pull a large camper or boat trailer. Trailers of this size require electric braking systems which are powered via a brake controller installed in the F250. Trailers are also required by the U.S. Department of Transportation to have working brake, signal and marker lights. Testing these lights prior to every trip is a good way to avoid having a conversation with a police officer.
Instructions

1
Add the weight of the trailer to the weight of the cargo. The trailer's weight is listed on its data plate under gross trailer weight. This plate is secured to the frame of the trailer.
-
2
Open the owner's manual for the F250 and locate its maximum towing capacity. The weight of the trailer and cargo must be less than the towing capacity.
-
-
3
Back the F250 up to the trailer's coupler with assistance from a friend to align the two. Lower the coupler onto the trailer's hitch and lock in place with the latch. Secure the latch with a hitch pin through the handle.
-
4
Fasten the trailer's electrical plug to the vehicle's electrical receiver.
-
5
Connect the trailer's right chain to the left side of the hitch and the left chain to the right side. It is important that the chains attach to the hitch or the frame of the vehicle to do their job.
-
6
Walk around the vehicle and trailer double checking the connections and the proper operation of the trailer's lights.
-
7
Drive slower than normal and increase the stopping distance to the vehicle in front of you. The weight of the trailer reduces the braking and cornering of the F250.
