How to Get Rid of Clothes With Moths Without Hurting the Birds thumbnail
Clothing moths cause holes in woolen garments.

Moth infestation becomes serious problem if the moth larvae start feeding on your clothing or carpeting. Clothes moths prefer to feed on natural wool, felt or animal skins, especially if these items are not laundered before storage. Clothes moths are not attracted to light, and larvae prefer darkness, such as closets. Preventing moth infestations with moth balls may cause a hazard to pets, wildlife and birds, as moth balls contain insecticide. If the clothes have been fumigated with chemicals or stored with moth balls, they should be disposed of carefully to avoid hurting birds. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine all closets, carpets and clothing for evidence of moth infestation. Clothes moths are smaller than regular moths and have a golden color. Unlike common outdoor moths, clothing moths are poor fliers and repelled by direct light or sunshine. Moth infestation is evident by larvae leaving behind their protective tubing or holes in woolen garments.

    • 2

Vacuum all areas thoroughly that may contain moths such as articles of clothing, rugs, floors and closets in the immediate area. Clothes moths do not travel far, and vacuuming is a good way to reduce their larvae. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately.

    • 3

Wash and launder all clothing that has potentially been affected by moths. Dry cleaning will kill moth larvae, as will brushing and airing articles in direct sunlight. Heat from the dryer kills moths as does freezing the garment for 30 minutes in a freezer.

    • 4

Wrap heavily infested or very damaged clothing in a plastic bag and dispose of in the trash. If this clothing has been treated with fumigants or moth balls, sealing it in a bag should keep it out of reach of birds, pets and wildlife.

    • 5

Prevent future moth infestation by reducing home humidity and laundering all clothing items before storage, as moths are attracted to humid body fluids. Place woolens in sealed bags and clean containers for storage. Mothballs are not necessary if items are properly cleaned and protected. New cedar chests and cedar balls do repel moths naturally, but the oils wear off in a few years.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash hands thoroughly before touching and storing cleaned woolen items in order to prevent body oils or food residues.
