Instructions

    • 1

Take French lessons from a teacher who speaks with the same French dialect you want to learn. Dialects differ between France's regions and other French-speaking countries and this can affect pronunciation of words.

    • 2

Focus on listening and speaking activities. Listen to French radio, TV and films; listen to and engage in French conversations.

    • 3

Learn to pronounce new words by having native French speakers say the word first, followed by your repetition. When they say the word, train your eyes on the shapes that their mouth makes and how their tongue moves. Copy the movements with your mouth.

    • 4

Practice saying difficult words, such as "anticonstitutionnellement" (unconstitutional). Have a native French speaker say it correctly and mimic her pronunciation.

    • 5

Practice French tongue twisters, like "Un chasseur sachant chasser sait chasser sans son chien de chasse" (A hunter who knows how to hunt knows how to hunt without his hunting dog) and "Si six scies scient six cyprès, six cents scies scient six cent cyprès" (If six saws saw six cypresses, 600 saws saw 600 cypresses). Have a native French speaker say the tongue twister slowly first and then try to mimic his pronunciation.
