How to Decorate a Girl's Room in a Sports Theme

Sporty girls will love a room that reflects their passions.

Sports-themed rooms don't need to be the exclusive territory of boys. Girls who are active in sports or just big fans can enjoy this type of decor as well. Some sports such as gymnastics, ice skating and cheerleading are even dominated by girls. A sports-themed room provides ample opportunities for highlighting accomplishments of young, hardworking athletes. With plenty of bright colors, bold pieces and a bit of a feminine twist, this bedroom can be both sporty and girly at the same time.

Instructions

1. Select a bold color palette. If you're decorating the room to support a specific team, team colors are a great place to start. School athletes may want to use their school colors to decorate the room. Girls with a few favorite colors can use these as well. Any hue will work with a sports theme, but bright shades such as lime green and pacific blue or vivid violet and sunset orange have an energizing effect that's appropriate for a sports theme.

2. Use vertical stripes on the bedding or walls to give the room a sporty look as well as a sense of motion. Wide vertical stripes in similar colors such as two shades of pink provide a subtle effect for walls that adds interest to the room without overwhelming it.

3. Add wall decals, banners and posters to further the sports theme. For a basketball player's room, the outline of a hoop and ball on the wall along with a basketball player in action will make a great addition. For cheerleaders, paint words like "Go Team!" on the walls.

4. Mount a shelf on the wall for trophies and other sports memorabilia. Hang pegs or knobs on the wall beneath the shelf for ribbons and medals to hang.

5. Cover a large bulletin board in fabric that coordinates with the room's palette. Mount the board on the wall and use it to display sports schedules, ticket stubs, newspaper stories on favorite teams, photos, pennants and more. These small mementos represent the heart and soul of an avid sports fan or dedicated athlete's life.

Tips & Warnings

• If the room doesn't have a closet, or you're in need of more storage space, use metal lockers to complement the sports theme.

• Hair ribbons in team colors can be used as tie backs for curtains. These are especially well-placed in a cheerleader's room where these ribbons are sure to be in abundance from game days.
