How to Use Turbinado Sugar

Turbinado sugar goes well in tea, coffee and other beverages.

Turbinado or "raw" sugar is a tasty, healthier, lower-in-calorie alternative to typical granulated sugar. A teaspoon of turbinado sugar contains only 11 calories, while white table sugar contains 16. Because turbinado sugar is less refined, it retains some of the sugarcane juice's molasses flavor, color, moisture and minerals. Turbinado sugar can be used exactly like regular granulated sugar without making any adjustment to ingredient amounts. But, because of its larger granule and liquid content, it can take longer to dissolve and will add moistness to any recipe. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Add turbinado sugar to tea, coffee, fresh-squeezed juice and other beverages. Because of its light molasses content, turbinado sugar adds a full, mellow sweetness without the sharp taste.

    • 2

Use turbinado sugar on sugar cookies, cinnamon cookies and cinnamon toast, and as an ingredient in graham cracker pie crusts.

    • 3

Melt or caramelize turbinado sugar, or use it as is, as a dessert topping. Dissolve a small amount of turbinado sugar into a few tablespoons of your favorite cognac and drizzle it over a bowl of fruit salad.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store turbinado sugar in an airtight container, like you do brown sugar.

  • Turbinado sugar is a vegan food.

  • If kept unsealed, turbinado sugar can dry out, become stale and hardened, and lose its flavor. Keep it fresh in a sealed container.
