How to Display Blankets for Sale

An attractive display can make the difference between selling and merely showing your handmade blankets, quilts and Afghans. Your display, one element of visual merchandising, is a powerful tool that can stimulate interest and entice customers to purchase. To draw customer attention, flaunt your blankets, make them accessible and add special touches to create an emotional connection with potential customers.

Things You'll Need

  • Support racks or hangers
  • Card-stock paper
  • Photos
  • Use a standing rack or hanging device to arrange the blanket so that it can be easily viewed by potential customers. A folded blanket laying of a low table may be perceived as having less value than one that is proudly exhibited. Display the entire blanket to show off the overall pattern, unless it's especially large. Think of your blanket as a featured item. Don't crowd it. Negative space between it and other items will draw attention to the blanket.

  • Provide information about the blanket. Buyers who are willing to pay top dollar for handmade goods like to know about the items they are buying. An attractive placard attached to or displayed near the blanket should include information such as the designer or maker, fabric content, construction method, where the blanket was made, the name of the design and the price.

  • Print the placard on attractive card stock and identify special features of the blanket. Include statements such as "The colors of this quilt were inspired by the beautiful Blue Morpho Butterfly (Morpho peleides), a threatened species native to South and Central America".

  • Display the blanket with items or photos to encourage sales. Blankets conjure feelings of warmth, comfort and security. Draw on your customers' emotions. For example, a picture of a baby blanket draped over a crib or rocking chair has emotional impact and allows your customer to see how the item could be used. Take a picture of the blanket neatly folded or in an attractive gift box to position it as a gift item. Giving an artistic handmade blanket to a loved one is an endearing gesture of compassion and generosity.
