How to Sink a Molly Bolt

A molly bolt is a type of hollow drywall anchor that consists of three parts: a plastic or metal jacket, a washer and a screw. It can support heavy objects such as pictures or mirrors up to about 50 lbs. Molly bolts with a pointed end are relatively easy to sink into the drywall where the plastic or metal sleeve expands to hold the bolt securely in place. You can also easily remove a molly bolt from drywall if you intend to reuse it.

Things You'll Need

  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Molly bolt setter tool
  • Mark the position where you will sink the molly bolt. Place the pointed end of the molly bolt on the mark, and gently tap the molly bolt with a hammer until the jacket collar is flush with the drywall's surface. Do not tap the bolt hard enough to countersink it through the drywall.

  • Turn the bolt with a screwdriver until the sides of the molly bolt jacket expand and form a tight grip on the drywall. Overturning the bolt will cause the molly bolt jacket to sink too far and create a dimple in the drywall. Loosen the bolt slightly with the screwdriver if this happens.

  • Grasp the collar on the molly bolt jacket and wiggle it back and forth a few times to ensure that the jacket sides have fully expanded and that they will hold the bolt securely in place in the drywall.

  • Unscrew the bolt from the molly bolt jacket. Place the object you are hanging against the molly bolt washer and jacket. Thread the molly bolt through the object and the washer and then into the molly bolt jacket. Tighten the molly bolt with a screwdriver.

  • Tug on the object you are hanging to ensure that the molly bolt is holding it securely so that the object will not fall from the wall. Finish tightening the molly bolt with a molly bolt setter tool, if necessary. Again, do not tighten the molly bolt so much that it forms a dimple in the drywall.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your molly bolt does not have a pointed end, you will have to drill a guide hole into the drywall first in order to sink the molly bolt.
