How to Dress a Child Up Like a Zombie

How to Dress a Child Up Like a Zombie thumbnail

Most children love to dress up as mythical, monstrous creatures. Creating a zombie costume suitable for your child is more about subtle, creative touches than expensive store bought outfits that only hint at the sinister side within. Instructions

    • 1

Use a slightly damp makeup sponge to apply a thin coat of white base paint over the child's face and neck (avoid the eye area). Don't go for full coverage; imperfect shading helps create the look. Use the same makeup sponge to lightly dab deep purple face paint directly under his eyes; fade the purple paint into the sides of the child;s nose and up to his eyebrows. Use a fine paint brush to thickly apply fake blood around the child's mouth; let the fake blood dribble around his mouth and chin naturally. If desired, apply fake scars and wounds to his face and back of his hands.

    • 2

Dress your child in normal, everyday clothing for a modern zombie look; for a more traditional zombie style, think funeral attire (only use old clothing for either style). Use scissors to create strategic rips and tears in the clothing to simulate previous zombie fights. Spatter fake blood over the clothing, preferably the day before the costume is needed; congealed fake blood gives the look of past feedings more convincingly than fresh. Use glue to apply a thin layer of potting soil to shoes to create mess-free zombie footwear.

    • 3

Dampen the child's hair with a spray bottle filled with water. Using your fingers, apply a light hair gel. Use a wide-tooth comb to carefully tease the child's hair into unruly bunches. Spray generously with hair spray. While optional, entwining twigs in the child's hair will help complete the look.

    • 4

Purchase props that are age appropriate for your little zombie. Small children will delight in carrying around a soft plush brain, while older children can use gorier props such as vinyl dismembered arms and legs. Judge your child's maturity level so nobody has to deal with nightmares.

    • 5

Teach your child classic zombie phrases, such as "Brains!" and various other unutterable groans. Show the child how to walk slowly, preferably with a limp. For an outgoing child, learning how to zombie dance may make her the hit of the costume party.

Tips & Warnings

  • Makeup should always be tested by applying a bit to the inner elbow; if redness appears, do not use.
