How to Give Platelets

How to Give Platelets thumbnail
Donating platelets will make you feel good about yourself and help save lives.

Donating platelets can help save the lives of those in need. Cancer and organ replacement recipients often have lowered immune systems making them more susceptible to disease. Platelet treatments help boost the immune systems of these patients. According to the Red Cross, one platelet donation is equal to 12 to 18 whole blood donations. One platelet donation can result in multiple platelet therapy treatments to those in need. Donating platelets are in high demand. The donation process is simple and will take just a few hours time.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local Red Cross to find out if there is a platelet donation site near you. Removing platelets from blood requires special equipment that only certain Red Cross locations have access. If there is no Red Cross location near you, they may be able to give information on local hospitals that may be able to accept the donation.

    • 2

Schedule a time to donate platelets. The process takes between 2.5 to 3 hours total according to the Red Cross so appointments are preferred over walk-ins.

    • 3

Go to the location about half an hour prior to your donation appointment. This will allow you to fill out all required registration information.

    • 4

Complete the mini physical which includes taking vitals such as blood pressure and temperature readings along with a brief medical questionnaire.

    • 5

Give the donation. Most locations will place you in a comfortable chair with access to television, DVD player, music and even wi-fi. Needles will be inserted into each arm, one for collecting blood and the other for returning it back once the platelets have been removed.

    • 6

Allow time for recovery. Each state varies for the required time before you can leave after a donation, typically it is between 10 to 15 minutes. Snacks and juice are offered and are recommended. Heavy lifting is to be avoided for the remaining portion of the day, otherwise you may resume normal activities.
