1
Carefully review the online help manual that you can access through the program just by going online. While the help pages do not provide a great deal of "how to" information, they do explain the functions of the various tools and features.
-
2
Join some of the online sites that offer forums and tutorials related to Photoshop CS5. In the forums, you have the opportunity to ask questions of people who have years of experience using Photoshop. The tutorials on these sites often are written based on a project, which is a useful way to understand how tools are used, not just how they work.

3
Sign up for a Photoshop CS5 class or classes at a community college. The advantage of doing this is that you get to directly interact with the instructor. In addition, you will be using a school license at the school lab, so you won't have to buy the program yet.

Buy and study some books covering Photoshop CS5. Some you might want to consider include "Photoshop CS5: The Missing Manual" by Lesa Snider, "Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers: The Ultimate Workshop" by Martin Evening and Jeff Schewe, "Photoshop CS5: Essential Skills" by Mark Galer and Philip Andrews and "Photoshop CS5 All-in-One For Dummies" by Barbara Obermeier.
