How to Identify Staff Training Needs
A well-trained staff is an efficient staff---one that helps a business grow and profit. However, it is important that managers know exactly what type of training to provide their staff. If the management at a company correctly identifies the training needs within the firm, the quality of the workforce constantly increases. Training that is not focused on the right areas, on the other hand, is usually a costly distraction without any real benefit.

1
Identify where you want the company to go. The better the vision about future growth and the direction of the firm, the more clear the employee training should be. Design all training with those goals in mind (See Reference 1).

2
Examine what level employees are currently performing at, and what level they should ideally be at. Use a variety of methods to gather this information to gain a broad-spectrum picture of what circumstances are currently like within the company. Interview employees, issue questionnaires and speak with ground-level supervisors to get a picture of where employee performance or education could be improved (See References 2).

Get specific about what training will benefit your employees the most. In an ideal situation, you should provide training in areas that are going to be measurable, so that you can quantify success. For instance, in a customer service role, you could train employees to provide better service to your customers. A follow-up survey with customers will indicate the effectiveness of the training.

Choose the employees who need training the most. Sometimes, within a company, there is no time or money to provide training for everyone immediately. Identify where the need is greatest and focus your initial training there. You can always train more staff at a later date (See References 3).

Tips & Warnings
Another way to identify training needs is to look at areas where competitors are outperforming the company. This gives you a strong sense of where to focus training in order to compete better.
