Mortar Mix Directions
Mortar, or thinset, is literally the glue that holds your construction project together. Mortar is made up of a precise combination of lime, cement and sand. You can take the guesswork out of proportions and ratios by purchasing a premeasured mortar mix. The process of mixing the mortar with water is quick and easy, but it does require a bit of arm strength. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Large mixing container
- Mortar mix, 50 pounds
- Power drill
- Mixing attachment

Pour 5 quarts of water into a large mixing container. The container should be clean and free of any cracks.

Pour 50 pounds of mortar mix into the mixing container and combine it with the water. Mix this with a power drill and mixing attachment for best results. Work up, down and around the sides of the container to ensure even mixing throughout.

Keep mixing until the mortar is smooth, like spreadable butter. You may need to add a small amount of water to get this texture. Pour the water in slowly to avoid adding too much. Test the mortar by pressing it down with your finger. When ready, your finger will leave a slight mark.

Allow the mortar to rest for 5 minutes, then mix it again. Allow a second resting period of 5 minutes before mixing it a final time.

Tips & Warnings
Only prepare as much mortar as you can use in 30 minutes.
Do not leave wet mortar in the sun for extended periods of time because it will dry out prematurely.
