How to Make a Fabric Hammock
Making a woven net hammock is a bit of an art form and requires knowledge of different kinds of knots and a lot of patience. Making a fabric hammock, on the other hand, is quick, easy and can be accomplished by anyone with enough savvy to use a sewing machine. Choose heavy, strong fabric such as calico so the hammock will last. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Non-stretch fabric, 1 1/5-by-3 1/2 yards
- Sewing machine
- 3/4-inch non-stretch rope, 50 feet
- Scissors

Fold a double 1/4-inch seam along the length of each side of a 1 1/5-by-3 1/2 yard, non-stretch piece of fabric and sew the seam down with a sewing machine.

Fold another double 1/4-inch seam over on the ends of the fabric and sew together with the sewing machine.

Make a 2-inch-wide fold on each end of the fabric, creating a 2-inch loop at each end. Sew the loops down with double stitching along the seam.

Cut a 50-foot length of non-stretch, 3/4-inch diameter rope in two with a pair of scissors. Thread each portion of rope through one end of the hammock through the loop in the ends of the fabric. The fabric hammock is now ready for hanging.

Tips & Warnings
Use eye bolts and S-hooks to hang the hammock either between two sturdy trees or posts on the deck or patio.
Choose rope by working weight rather than by tensile strength. This will give a more accurate estimate of the weight-bearing capacity of the rope. It should have a working weight greater than the weight of the heaviest person using the hammock.
