How to Teach Subtraction Math Facts
Subtraction can be difficult to learn for some students. Math is built upon the early concepts so it is important for students to comprehend the earlier skills. Children have an easier time understanding subtraction facts when they can relate to it. When teaching subtraction, use real-life examples to explain to students how to subtract.

1
Teach subtraction by using skills the student already knows. Most children learn addition first. Subtraction is easier to explain if you tell the student that subtraction is addition in reverse.
-
2
Play with the student to display basic subtraction math facts. Use visual cues like colored blocks to show the student how to subtract. Playing games will hold the child's attention longer and help the student understand the concept.

3
Count days to the child's birthday or some other special occasion to show another real-world example to help the child learn subtraction.
-
4
Practice subtraction with small numbers at first. Use flash cards and worksheets to help the child practice single-digit subtraction first. The child will be able to apply the subtraction facts to larger numbers after they grasp the concept.

5
Create a pretend store. Give the child fake money and allow him to purchase "items" from the store. Show him how to subtract the amount so he can see what money remains.
