The Dodge Ram is a full-sized pickup truck manufactured by Chrysler. The truck is named for the Dodge ram hood ornament that the company has used on all of its cars since the 1930s. In 2003, the Dodge Ram was introduced with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine. In addition to several other components, the Dodge Ram features an in-tank fuel filter, which makes changing the filter a little difficult.

Step 1

Park your Dodge Ram in a safe location on level ground. Engage the parking brake or apply tire stops to the wheels of the vehicle. This will help ensure the vehicle does not roll while you are changing the fuel filter.

Step 2

Turn off the engine, open the hood and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Step 3

Slide underneath your truck and locate the fuel tank. Search the fuel tank for the fuel fill hose. You should be able to identify the fuel fill hose as a rubber cap. Unscrew the fuel fill hose and allow the fuel from the fuel tank to drain into a drain pan. Drain the fuel tank until it is empty.

Step 4

Access the rubber grommet inside the fuel tank. Locate the fuel filter housing unit. You should be able to identify the fuel filter housing unit as a cylindrical container connected to a black tube, which is the fuel line.

Step 5

Pull and twist the fuel filter out of the rubber grommet. Use a fuel line disconnect tool to remove the fuel line from the fuel filter. Remove the fuel line clamp along with the fuel filter. Discard the old fuel filter and the line clamp.

Step 6

Place a new fuel line clamp onto the fuel line, and attach a new fuel filter to the fuel line. Push the fuel filter back into the rubber grommet and twist it securely into place. Replace the fuel fill hose to the fuel tank.

Step 7

Slide out from underneath the truck and reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
