How to Grow Clementine Plants
A Clementine is a variety of the mandarin orange, or Citrus reticulata. It is very similar to a tangerine except that a Clementine is almost always seedless. The maximum height of a Clementine tree is only about 20 feet, making it a widely cultivated fruit tree among home gardeners. Most of the United States is too cold to plant a Clementine tree outside, but it also grows well in a container. A grafted rootstock is the most common method of propagating a Clementine tree. 1
Purchase a Clementine tree from a commercial nursery. This will typically consist of a Clementine scion grafted onto a compatible rootstock. The Clementine tree should be no more than 2 years old to minimize the difficulties of transplantation.
-
2
Select a planting site for the Clementine tree. This tree does not tolerate frost, so you should only plant it outside where freezing temperatures during the winter are uncommon. Choose a large pot for an indoor Clementine tree.

3
Fill the container halfway with a general-purpose potting soil with a neutral pH. This type of soil provides the good drainage that a Clementine tree needs to thrive. Remove the Clementine tree from the nursery container without damaging the roots and place it in the planting pot. Fill the pot with potting soil until the soil reaches the soil line on the Clementine tree.
-
4
Water the Clementine tree regularly to keep the soil moist but not wet. Place the pot outside during the spring once you expect the temperature to remain above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Ensure the outside location is in full sun and has protection from the wind.
-
5
Move the plant indoors in front of a southern window during the fall before the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Mist the Clementine tree daily with water while it is indoors. This treatment may allow the Clementine tree to produce fruit during the winter.
