How to Trim a Welsh Terrier's Face
A Welsh terrier is an energetic, medium-sized dog that requires some grooming maintenance. A Welsh terrier does not shed, as many dog breeds do, so his coat needs to be plucked three to four times each year to remove the old fur; his facial fur needs to be brushed at least twice per week; and his coat should be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. The Welsh terrier has a rectangular head and wide-set eyes, so it's important to trim his facial fur carefully for maximum attractiveness.

Apply the rubber gloves and stroke your Welsh terrier's head firmly, first in the direction the hair grows, and then against the hair. This action removes the dead hair and makes room for new growth. Use a damp washcloth to clean the inside corner of the eyes.

Place a #10 clipper blade on the clippers. Standing in front of him, hold your terrier's head gently between your hands and lift his head up toward you. Envision two lines running from the outer corner of the eyes to the outer corner of the mouth.

Clip the fur along these two lines back towards the terrier's neck, in the direction the fur grows. Then, clip from the neck towards the lines, against the direction the fur grows. The fur should lay flat, if done correctly. Clip from the eyebrows towards his neck; first in the direction the fur grows and then against it, avoiding the ears each time.

Change the clipper blade to a #15. Lift up an ear, and trim down the backside and around the base; repeat on the other side.

Comb the terrier's beard so it lays flat. Take a small section between two fingers. Slide your fingers about 1 to 2 inches down the section and cut off the excess with the grooming scissors. Repeat until the beard is evenly trimmed.

Use the grooming scissors to trim the fur on top of the terrier's snout slightly shorter than the beard. Then, trim some fur off each eyebrow so that the dog's eyes are visible.

Blend the beard into the sides of the fur on the dog's head, using scissors. Trim small sections at a time. Angle your hand towards the back of the head while trimming to achieve a smooth blend.
