How to Paint on Top of Mastic
The term Mastic is generally applied to exterior vinyl siding, trim, fascia and/or aluminum soffits manufactured by Mastic Solutions, a division of Ply Gem Building Products. Often, Mastic products come pre-finished; however, if you'd like to alter the color of the exterior Mastic siding or soffits on your home, you can as long as you condition the Mastic for adhesion first. Whether you're dealing with vinyl or aluminum Mastic products, you'll experience paint failure unless you treat each surface in a particular way based on its composition.

Instructions
-
-
1
Wash the exterior Mastic surfaces, using a pressure washer. Let the Mastic dry for two hours.
-
2
Abrade vinyl Mastic siding, trim and fascia to promote adhesion. Sand these types of Mastic until they feel rough, or long-term adhesion may prove impossible.
-
-
3
Cover exterior surfaces beneath the Mastic, using canvas drop cloths.
-
4
Coat vinyl Mastic with acrylic latex primer, using a roller. Roll vertically when possible, proceeding left to right. Prime only a three-foot wide section of Mastic at a time; touch-up this area, using a polyester brush, before proceeding to the next three-foot wide area. Let the Mastic dry for two hours.
-
5
Wash the brush, using a hose.
-
6
Apply metal etching primer to Mastic aluminum soffits, using the polyester brush. Apply gentle pressure with each stroke to prevent noticeable marks from showing up in the finish. Let the aluminum Mastic dry for three hours.
-
7
Wash the brush, using a hose.
-
8
Paint the Mastic surfaces as you primed them; add an acrylic latex paint. Let the Mastic dry for two hours before adding a second coat. Don't add an additional coat unless the primer bleeds through the first one.
