How to Bake Avocados


Baked avocados can be prepared year round and presented as an appetizer or main course for a light lunch or dinner. Lending themselves to a variety of different fillings, stuffed avocados let you flex your creative cooking muscles, pairing your stuffing ingredients perfectly to the other dishes that you are serving. For a filling meal, serve baked avocados with a loaf of fresh bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and a glass of white wine or lager-style beer.

Things You'll Need

  • Ripe avocado
  • Very sharp knife
  • Stuffing
  • Thick baking sheet or roasting pan
  • Sea salt or kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Large serving platter or individual serving plates
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Cut the avocados lengthwise down the center, making each side as close to the same size as possible.

  • Using a very sharp knife, chop into the center of the avocado pit and slowly remove the knife. The knife will pull the pit out so it can be discarded without damaging the avocado half.

  • Fill the center of each avocado half with the stuffing of your choice. Place the avocados on a thick baking sheet or in a roasting pan. Sprinkle the top of the avocados with sea salt or kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

  • Bake the avocados for 7 to 10 minutes or until the filling is warmed and has just begun to brown.

  • Transfer the avocado halves to a large serving platter or individual serving plates and serve immediately while warm. Alternately, you can cover the avocado halves with plastic wrap once they have cooled to room temperature and refrigerate them for up to 8 hours if necessary.

  • Common fillings for baked avocados include sautéed shrimp, mixed chicken salad or mixed crab salad. However, you can be creative with fillings for avocados, making a test avocado before serving them to guests if you need to.
