When purchasing an Internet connection from an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you don't always get the connection speed that you pay for. There are a number of websites on the Internet which will test your dial-up connection and tell you how fast it is. Each of these sites is free to use and won't cause any problems to your Internet connection. You can use each of these sites in a matter of minutes.

Open up your Internet browser and type "http://www.speedtest.net" into the address bar.

Select the button named "Begin Test" at the top of the world map in order to begin the test.

Wait for the test to find your location and ISP based on your IP (Internet protocol) address.

Wait for your total results to be calculated. This will allow you to see your ping, download speed and upload speed.

Choose whether you want to share your results on a social networking site or compare your results with other users to see how fast your Internet is in comparison to other people's connections.

Open up your Internet browser and type "http://performance.toast.net" into your address bar.

Select either "Text" or "Shuffle" on the dial-up menu on the left-hand side depending on your dial-up connection.

Move your cursor over the "Start Test" button at the bottom of the page. Left click to begin the test.

Wait for the test to load the image and take you to the results page.

Check your results to determine your Internet speed by the time it took to load the page. It will also tell you the download speed of your dial-up connection.
