Choose the kind of goldfish clip you want on the Etsy website. You can choose the colors and the size, depending on the type of clip you want to get. The goldfish is attached to an alligator or French clip, but you can choose the attachment. The goldfish can also be added to an interchangeable knit headband, and can have a nonslip piece added as well. Note that all goldfish clips are handmade, therefore you can make special requests regarding your own personal goldfish clip.

Open up the goldfish hair clip. If it is an alligator clip, just press the wider side so that it opens up like the mouth of an alligator. If it is a French clip, you will have to squeeze the sides until it pops open. To close an alligator clip, you simply place it over hair and release, but to close a French clip, you have to squeeze it over the hair until it clicks into place.

Brush or comb hair into desired hairstyle. Goldfish hair clips can be added on to finish off a ponytail, bun or braid, or they can be used to hold up a strand of hair to get it off the face.
To use with a ponytail, bun or braid, make the hairstyle first. Open the goldfish hair clip and add on to hair on the side of the head, in the back or on the crown of the head.
To hold up a single strand, brush or comb hair smooth. Take a 1-inch strand from the front of the head and bring it above the ear. Hold in place with the goldfish hair clip.
When using on an infant, brush hair to the side with your fingers and gently place the goldfish hair clip over hair.

Remove the goldfish hair clip by opening it up and slipping it off of hair.

If the goldfish hair clip gets dirty, wash it gently with some soap and water.
