Pre-writing is considered one of the most crucial steps of the writing process. During this step, students will conduct research on the topic of their report. They can use text books, encyclopedias and the internet in order to gather information on the subject of study. Once a student has collected the information needed to write the report, it is necessary to plan the paper using some sort of graphic organizer. Examples of graphic organizers are outlines, webs and four square organizers. If a student does a thorough job during the pre-writing process, the rest of the steps will come together easily.

Once the pre-writing process is complete and the student has a comprehensive graphic organizer for their report, they will begin to draft their paper. During the drafting process a student will turn their pre-writing in to an organized rough copy of their report. While a student would not want to purposely make mistakes, attention to detail is not essential in this step of the writing process. The focus of this step is to get their ideas down in sentences in an organized fashion. Another word for the rough draft is a "sloppy copy", because you will make mistakes and this copy of the report is not perfect.

Once the rough draft is complete, a student will want to revise and edit their sloppy copy. During this step a student will refine their paper according to guidelines of good writing. They will make sure their ideas are clear, their information is well organized, their sentences flow and their conventions are up to par. During this step, it would be advisable to read the report out loud to someone and listen to the report being read out loud. This will help the student to hear any problems that may be overlooked while reading.

Once the paper is revised and edited, a student will create the final draft of the report. The student needs to make sure they are aware of any formatting requirements. Some reports may require a student to use APA or MLA formatting. There are many resources on the internet to help students format their reports appropriately.
