Anyone can make a tutu.

Ballerinas and magical fairies are just a couple of the tutu-wearing characters your little girl probably dreams about. With a bare minimum of sewing you can make your little ballerina her own special tutu. Or make one for yourself to wear as part of a Halloween costume.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/4-in.-wide elastic

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the waist of the person who will wear the tutu. Measure from the waist down to where you want the tutu to end as well.

    • 2

Measure and cut a strip of 3/4-in.-wide elastic 2 in. shorter than the waist measurement.

    • 3

Overlap the ends of the elastic by 1 in. Sew the overlapped ends together with a zigzag stitch.

    • 4

Divide the waist measurement by two to determine the number of tulle strips to cut. Measure and cut the desired number of tulle strips 9-in. wide and twice the length of the desired tutu length. Cut each strip of tulle in half lengthwise.

    • 5

Loop one end of a tulle strip through the center of the waistband. Bring the two ends of the tulle strip together so the two halves are the same length. Double knot the tulle tight against the waistband. Continue tying the tulle strips around the waistband. Cut more tulle strips if necessary to make a full tutu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut strips of ribbon to the same length as the tulle and knot them around the waistband for a decorative touch.

  • Use small dots of hot glue to attach ribbon roses around the waistband of the tutu for extra embellishment.
