Answering a lawyer's questions doesn't have to be an uncomfortable experience.

The mere thought of answering a lawyer's questions makes some people uncomfortable, but it does not have to be that way. Whether you are testifying in court or simply being interviewed in an attorney's office, you can put yourself at ease by following a few simple tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell the truth. No matter the situation, always be honest with an attorney, whether he is representing you or interrogating you. If you are not honest in court proceedings, you could end up facing perjury charges.

    • 2

Be confident. Answer with a self-assured tone and give definitive answers. For instance, if asked, "Did he pull a gun on you?" The answer would not be a simple "yes" or "no", but a confident, "Yes, he did," or "No, he did not."

    • 3

Speak clearly. When being questioned, respond in a clear, distinct voice. Do not mumble. Refrain from using profanity unless you are specifically quoting someone you have been asked about.

    • 4

Do not memorize. Familiarize yourself with the information you will be asked about by the attorney, but do not try to memorize what you will say. If you should stumble in your response, it will appear you have been coached. If you have records or notes you need to refer to, feel free to bring them during the interview or when you testify.

    • 5

Keep your cool. Do not let an attorney push your buttons and make you lose your temper. Some questions may be emotional or personal. Try to remain calm and give solid answers without losing control. If you need a moment to regain your composure, do not hesitate to ask for a break.
