Place your monitor in a comfortable position.

Whether you are buying your first computer or replacing an older model, you need to set up the computer hardware properly from the start. Taking the time to set the computer up properly can save you a lot of headaches down the road. When you buy a new computer it should contain everything you need to get started, including the CPU, mouse and keyboard, and sometimes an external monitor and printer as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a suitable spot on your desk for the computer. Note the location of the power outlets, and make sure you have enough room for the power cords to reach both the computer tower and the monitor.

    • 2

Place the computer on the desk and unpack the keyboard, mouse and monitor. For now, position the computer so that you can easily see the connections on the back.

    • 3

Find the USB slots in the back of the computer, then insert the USB mouse and keyboard into two available slots. Make sure you plug these in snugly.

    • 4

Attach the monitor cable to the back of the computer. There is generally only one port where the monitor cord will fit. The monitor cable may be color coded, with blue for the analog connection and white for the digital connection. If not, look for a small, nearly square connection on the back of the computer. This is the analog connection. If the computer also includes a digital video connection, that connection will be long and rectangular.

Connect your printer and any other peripherals to the computer using the USB ports. Plug the computer, monitor and other components in, then start the computer and allow it to run through any setup procedure it needs to. Every computer manufacturer uses a different setup process, so watch the screen and provide information as needed. You may, for instance, be prompted to enter your name, or the serial number of the computer. Such registration is usually optional.

Connect your network cable or wireless network card when prompted. If you use a wired network, the cable looks like a large phone cord. Simply insert that cable into the slot at the back of the computer. If you are using a desktop computer that does not have wireless built in, you will need to insert a small wireless adapter into one of the free USB slots.
