How to Use TCP to Clean Wood

Save

TCP 100 ("Teak Cleaner Powder") is a patented powder-based teak cleaner used mainly for cleaning boat decks and other components made of teak. This product can also be used as a multipurpose cleaner for exterior furniture and painted surfaces. Since it does not contain acid or caustic soda, TCP will not harm the environment and it poses no hazard to the user. In addition, the cleaner does not harm caulking, boat hardware or painted surfaces. Use this water-soluble powder to swab your decks weekly, restore the teak’s original look, and prevent fading from UV exposure.

Things You'll Need

  • TCP Teak Cleaner Powder
  • Plastic bucket
  • Hose
  • Mop
  • Clean, dry rag
  • Scrubbing pad or polypropylene bristle brush
  • Long-handled squeegee

Light Cleaning

  • Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup of TCP powder into a plastic bucket containing 1 gallon of hot water. Mix thoroughly until the powder is dissolved.

  • Spread the mixture onto the surface. Work the cleaner into the wood by brushing lightly across the grain with a broom.

  • Allow the mixture to remain on the surface for 15 minutes without drying out.

  • Hose the surface down with clean water.

  • Run a mop over the deck to remove any pooling water.

  • After most of the deck has dried, wipe up any remaining wet areas with a clean, dry rag.

Heavy Cleaning

  • Wet the deck with clean water and a mop.

  • Spread a light dusting of dry TCP powder over the deck.

  • Scrub across the grain with a scrubbing pad or a polypropylene bristle brush -- never scrub with the grain.

  • Rinse thoroughly with a hose.

  • Remove excess water with a long-handled squeegee.
